The conquest of Jerusalem in the First Crusade (1099).

Illustration from a ms. of Guillaume de Tyr, Histoire d'Outremer, Bibliothèque municipale, Lyon; reproduced in Ökumenisches Heiligenlexikon.

Employing a gigantic seige engine, Godfrey managed to breach Jerusalem's northern wall. The Fatimid defense of the city collapsed. This was followed by an indiscriminate slaughter of Jerusalem's inhabitants.
