" * * *Jack Irvin Thomas
Son of William Dickinson Thomas
Son of John Benjamin Thomas
Son of Samuel Burdette Thomas
When I asked Jack what his grandfather's name was, he responded 'Grandpa'. I sent for William Dickinson Thomas' social security application. It gave his parents names as John Benjamin Thomas and Sallie Scott. His birthplace was Hurtsboro, Alabama.
Since Hurtsboro is in Russell County, I went to the courthouse in Phenix City, the county seat. This courthouse has a staircase that circles as it goes down and I found very difficult to maneuver. Dust and dirt were everywhere. While going through the old probate records, I ran across an interesting tidbit. Filed on May 30, 1899, W. W. Dickinson et al, applicants filed an application for the admission of John B. Thomas into the Ala. Bryce Insane Hospital. Witnesses were W. W. Dickinson and M. S. Dickinson. We then sent for his medical records. In Georgia, they are sealed, but in Alabama, they are not..
He was admitted and released several times, and committed suicide while in the hospital.
Each time he was admitted, a form was completed.
John Benjamin Thomas, born Baker County, Georgia (in 1905, he was age 64)
He was a farmer.
Missionary Baptist on one form, Baptist on another
His home at that time was Montgomery, Alabama
Gives his father as Samuel B. Thomas, born South Carolina on one form, Hancock County, Georgia on another, farmer, age 40 when John was born, died in Texas of cholera at age 54.
Gives his mother as Ann R. Thomas, born Hancock County, Georgia, age about 36 when John was born
Six brothers lived to be grown (Mar 21, 1901), 0ne brother still living, 4 died (as of Jan 15, 1905)
Four sisters lived to be grown (Mar 21, 1901). One sister still living, 3 died (as of Jan 15, 1905)
He did not marry until he was age 40.
Married Sallie R. Thomas
Seven children living (Mar 21, 1901) 6 still living, one died (as of Jan 15, 1905)
Keeping the above in mind, it appears that Samuel Burdette Thomas and Ann R. Askew had 6 sons and 4 daughters.
From my research, I believe them to be:
Fred born about 1840
Thee or Theophilus, born about 1840
Araminta Thomas, born 2 Dec 1825 Hancock County, Georgia, died 1 Oct 1859 Union Springs, Bullock County, Alabama
Boy Thomas, birthdate unknown suspect between 1830-1835
Grigsby Eskridge Thomas born 30 Dec most likely Hancock County, Georgia, died 5 Feb 1914, Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia
Elizabeth R. Thomas born about 1835, Georgia
M. Thomas, born between 1835-1840
William B. Thomas, born about 1836
John Benjamin Thomas, born 13 Sep 1840, Baker County, Georgia, died 21 Oct 1905, Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama
Sophia Thomas, born about 1844, Georgia* * * "

The relationship of John Thomas or his mother to the Doss household is not clear. (Mrs. Mary Doss maiden name has been given in an S.A.R. application as Allison. No marriage record has been found.) The relationship to Roane County is also unclear; however, Ann's daughter Araminta was married there in 1844.
