MANHATTAN, N.Y. - Memorial service for Lyman Warren Clardy, 91, will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Gandy officiating. Private burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Clardy died Oct. 11. He was a native of Talladega and was the son of William Harry and Kate Hightower Clardy. He was a 1934 graduate of Davidson College with a BBA and a 1936 graduate of Harvard School of Business with a Masters Degree. He enlisted as a Naval officer in May of 1942, serving as commander Naval Air Priorities being charged with organizing transportation aboard commercial aircraft that had been commandeered by the government during World War II and was released from active duty in March of 1946. He retired from Naval Reserve as Lt. Commander in 1962.
He was the producer of the hit radio program "Music til Dawn" for 23 years, was director of the Arthur Godfrey Radio Show and was a model for a Camel cigarette ad at Times Square starting in 1940. He was a soldier who blew smoke rings the size of clouds into Times Square. He found great humor in the fact that he never smoked a cigarette in his life to achieve the pose for the billboard, the artist had him put a pencil in his mouth. He was paid a total of $5 for this modeling job. The next year they changed the uniform to a sailor, still using Lyman as model, and retired in 1962. He was a volunteer in blood donor programs for almost 40 years at Lenox Hill and Memorial-Sloan-Kettering Hospitals and at least a day a week volunteered reading to the blind at The Lighthouse.
